Famous People With Arthritis
What do comedienne Lucille Ball, French painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Hollywood actress Kathleen Turner and heart transplant specialist Dr. Christiaan Barnard have in common? They all suffered from arthritis, a disabling and crippling disease that affects over 40 million people in the United States alone. Experts say another 20 million people live with the symptoms of arthritis but haven’t been diagnosed and have no idea they have the disease.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that yearly arthritis is responsible for over 9,000 deaths, 750,000 hospitalizations, and it limits the activities of over eight million people. The disease costs the nation over $80 billion in medical care and lost wages.
One of the most common forms of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks joint cells, causing chronic inflammation and swelling of the joints. This is the most debilitating form of the disease that can make even the simplest activities – like opening a jar or walking – extremely difficult.
Comedy queen Lucille Ball of “I Love Lucy” fame had rheumatoid arthritis when she was 17 but that didn’t stop her from pursuing her dreams. Her first attack came while she was working as a model for Hattie Carnegie’s famous dress shop. She felt excruciating pain in her legs and the doctor who saw her said she would probably end up in a wheelchair as a result of the disease. Lucy was later referred to an orthopedic clinic near Columbia University where she was given experimental “horse serum” shots for several weeks that drained her money but didn’t stop the pain. Frightened and discouraged, she returned to her parent’s home in Jamestown, New York.
“Gradually the pain subsided and finally one day with the support of her father and doctor, Lucy stood up, feeling wobbly and unsteady. Her left leg was now somewhat shorter than her right leg and it pulled sideways. To correct this, she began wearing a 20 - pound weight in one of her black orthopedic shoes. Though Lucy had residual pain she was able to take a part offered her with the Jamestown Players and she later returned to New York City in search of her dreams,” said Carol and Richard Eustice - the people behind About.com’s Arthritis Guide who both have rheumatoid arthritis as well.
The famous French painter Renoir whose works adorn many museums also battled rheumatoid arthritis that bothered him during the last three decades of his life. He suffered his first attack in 1898 and his joints became severely deformed later.
“In 1904, Renoir weighed only 105 pounds and was barely able to sit. By 1910 he could not even walk using crutches and he became a prisoner in his own wheelchair. His hands were completely deformed, like the claws of a bird. A gauze bandage was used to prevent his fingernails from growing into the flesh. Renoir was unable to pick up a paintbrush at this point and it had to be wedged between his fingers,” the Eustices wrote. Still, he continued to paint everyday and produced some of his greatest masterpieces.
Hollywood star Kathleen Turner was so bothered by the pain of rheumatoid arthritis that she had suicidal thoughts and Dr. Christiaan Barnard, who performed the first human heart transplant in 1967, was forced into retirement in 1983 by the disease that had plagued him since youth.

Are Models Really Beautiful?
We live in a fashion-obsessed world. The media adds to this obsession by giving much more coverage to fashion and the private lives of models, than to more serious issues. The advertising industry too adds to this frenzy by using only models and film stars to endorse everything from Ayurvedic medicines to invertors.
As a result, women are increasingly influenced by the images of the anorexic models they see on TV, on billboards, in magazines, etc. They begin to think that female beauty means lanky, tall, stick-like figures without any curves whatsoever.
But is this real female beauty? Renee Zellweger had to put on 28 pounds to play the part of Bridget Jones in the hit movie Bridget Jones' Diary and can anyone deny that she looked absolutely gorgeous? Similarly, women who are plump - who don't look as if they came from a famine-stricken area are often ravishing.
Kate Winslet is another example of a curvy woman who looks good both in and out of clothes. Can anyone forget how wonderful she looked in Titanic?
People may have different ideas about which women they consider beautiful, but Kate Winslet is sure to be on everyone's list. And Kate's shape is closer to the shape of the average woman than to that of a ramp model. Elfin and cute Kylie Minogue, who wins fans not just with her singing but also with her personality, is another one sure to win votes. Tall and strong stars like Lucy Lawless may seem less feminine in the traditional sense, but she too has her admirers.
DESIRE TO BE THIN
But, in spite of having these role models, most women still yearn to be thin. What they do not realise that thin is not beautiful as far as men are concerned. Are there any flat-chested, pole-thin women in Playboy, for instance?
Geri Halliwell, a member of the Spice Girls singing group, was fantastic till she brought out her first solo album. But soon afterwards, she lost weight and began to look far too thin and gaunt. She lost her great looks and many of her admirers.
Men like women who have a sexy body. They are repulsed by thin, bony, assertive women with small breasts who smoke and exercise obsessively to keep their shape. Of course, the slim look attracts too but only when it is natural in a young woman. Self-made wrecks don't attract!
But teenage girls and young women don't always understand this. They are totally influenced by the pictures of the models that they see and by the views that men in the arts, music and fashion industries, who are often gay, express in interviews.
What does the fact that these men are gay have to do with it? Everything! Gay men do not find women sexually attractive and the models these men choose reveal this. Their models hardly look like women. They are androgynous.
They are women but they look like men - they are tall and have just token breasts and this is why gay men find them attractive.
By constantly praising such models, calling them truly beautiful and using only this androgynous look in fashion and advertising, the gay men in the world of arts, music and fashion are brainwashing women to think the same way.
Men want to be thought to be cool and so they want to have women that other men want. Since the image of the perfect woman is one who is thin to the point of looking anorexic and who is as flat as a pancake, the men then begin to want stick-thin trophy wives/lovers that other men find beautiful, on their arms.
As a result, they too end up disliking curves. So, the image created and sustained by the gay men and bitter older women (the fags and hags) who run the fashion world gets reinforced and accepted.
THE CONSEQUENCE
This often has sad results for the models who try to bring this image to life. Take, for example, Kate Moss, a famous British model. As she tried to live an artificial life in which putting on weight meant the end of her career, she took to drugs. Another fallout of the unnatural and oppressive demand being made on women to remain young and beautiful all their lives, is the demand for cosmetic surgery. Pamela Anderson became a star after she got silicone implants in her breasts. Hers is the very antithesis of the skinny look and men love her. These are men who are robustly heterosexual and don't care a hoot about models or high fashion.
What women should realise is that inner beauty is more important than being in line with whatever the fashion industry has decided is the look to be considered beautiful.
Currently the gay men in the fashion industry have decreed that the angular, thin, disdainful, self-absorbed and terminally shallow look is in. But this decree need not be accepted.
There is no one definition of beauty. No one can decree that this is beauty and nothing else is. My genes have made me tall, model-thin and flatchested, but I don't feel beautiful.
As female photographer Leslie Delano has said, all women are beautiful. As for women with curves, at least you can roll over in bed with them without worrying that you will cut yourself on their hips or shoulder blades.

Adam Sandler Tries His Hand at Family-friendly Fare
Funny man Adam Sandler, known for his crass, college boy humor in movies such as Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore, as well as his surprising turn as a bona fide dramatic actor in films like Punch-Drunk Love and Spanglish, tries his hand at a new genre: kid’s flicks. His latest project is Bedtime Stories, a heartwarming comedy aimed at families. The film is his first time to work with family entertainment empire Walt Disney Pictures.
Bedtime Stories, directed by Bringing down the House director Adam Shankman, does feature Sandler as an underachiever (a handyman for a fancy, super-sanitized hotel in Hollywood), a facet which comprises most of his past roles, but this time with a magical twist. When his character’s sister, played by Friends star Courtney Cox, loses her school principal job, she gets Sandler and her friend, played by Felicity sweetheart Keri Russell, to take care of her two kids, played by Laura Ann Kesling and Jonathan Morgan Heit. Sandler finds out that his only child-rearing skills lie in telling bedtime stories, so he sticks to this night after night. The kids have even taken to contributing to the stories, too.
Strangely enough, the stories start coming true, with Sandler experiencing parts of his bedtime stories in his real life. Naturally, hilarity ensues. Matt Lopez and Tim Herlihy's screenplay is a great medium for Sandler’s comic genius, giving him a situation that allows for plenty of wacky characters and even wackier situations. As with any family film, the presence of a trained guinea pig also makes everything even lighter and funnier.
Besides Sandler, Cox and Russell, British actor Russell Brand also adds extra comic relief to the film, playing a hotel waiter and Sandler’s best bud. Seemingly miscast actors, however, include Guy Pearce as the hotel manager and Xena: Warrior Princess’s Lucy Lawless as Pearce’s sidekick.
At the end of the day, Bedtime Stories truly lives up to its name: a film full of imagination and crazy, impossible situations. Sandler’s talent, however, is as real as it gets. It seems that this man can take any genre and make it his own.

Lucy Lawless (born Lucille Frances Ryan on March 29, 1968 in Auckland, New Zealand), is a Kiwi actress and singer best known for her role as Xena on the television series Xena: Warrior Princess from 1995 to 2001.
Lucy was born the fifth child of Frank and Julie Ryan. She discovered an enjoyment of acting in High School. At Auckland University, she studied foreign languages for a year. She then left for Europe with her boyfriend to travel around Germany and Switzerland. They went back and landed a job with a mining company in Australia. In 1988, Lucy and Garth Lawless were married. They returned to New Zealand and had a daughter, Daisy.
She had a guest role in 1990 on New Zealand TV series Shark in the Park, around the same time compatriot Karl Urban appeared.
Vanessa Angel was supposed to play a new character, the villainess Xena, in an episode of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, but became sick and was unable to travel to New Zealand. Lucy had previously played two different characters in Hercules, so the directors chose her as a replacement (though Lucy's hair had to be dyed to distinquish her from the previous, unrelated characters). Under the 5'10 1/2" Lucy, Xena's character became popular, so she started to redeem herself and got her own her series, Xena: Warrior Princess. The show was a hit, lasting six seasons.

In 2005, Lawless has a role in an episode of the television series Battlestar Galactica. She plays D'anna Biers, a reporter who works on a critical documentary about the crew of the Galactica and who, in secret, is actually a Cylon humanoid robot that has infiltrated the ship to gather information. As a blond, and using her native New Zealander accent, many fans of Battlestar Galactica have commented that they did not realize the actress was Lawless (this dispelled early fears that her appearance might be a blatant cameo, and in fact her character met with popular acceptance with the fans). Lawless will return in another episode in the series second season, and moreover agreed to return as a recurring cast member in season 3. Lawless will for a 10 episode arc in the 20 episode long third season. According to interviews, while she normally doesn't want to get too heavily involved in tv anymore, she really liked the writing, plots twists, and overall handling of the series (in fact executive producer David Eick had originally worked with her on Xena).
Lucy and Garth were divorced in 1995. She married the executive producer of Xena, Robert G. Tapert, in 1998. The couple have two sons; Julius Robert Bay Tapert (born 1999) and Judah Miro Tapert (born 2002). They all live in New Zealand.
Due to her character Xena's ambiguous sexuality, Lucy Lawless gained a large cult following in the lesbian community. A new term, dykon, was coined to describe her status as a gay icon. Although she is heterosexual, Lucy Lawless has enhanced this reputation by appearing at gay pride events such as the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
